History of the Innovative University of Enga

The Innovative University of Enga (IUE) was formally established under the Innovative University of Enga Act 2022, passed unanimously by the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea. This landmark legislation reflected the vision of both the national and Enga provincial governments to expand access to quality higher education and create a modern, forward-looking university in the Highlands.

The creation of IUE was not simply the birth of a new institution, but the culmination of years of planning and collaboration. Several existing institutions and academic programs in Enga were brought together and integrated to form a single university system. This merger laid the foundation for a strong, multi-disciplinary institution designed to serve both the province and the nation.

From its inception, IUE has placed a strong emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship, and employability. The university’s guiding motto, Aut Viam Inveniam Aut Faciam-“I shall either find a way or make one”-captures the spirit of resilience and determination that continues to drive its growth. With this focus, IUE quickly positioned itself as more than a traditional university; it is an institution committed to preparing students for the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly changing world.

The university welcomed its first student intake in 2024, enrolling over 860 students in the faculties of Education, Natural Sciences, and Health Sciences. Just one year later, in May 2025, IUE celebrated its inaugural graduation, awarding degrees to 166 pioneering graduates. This milestone marked not only a personal achievement for the students but also a historic moment for Enga Province and Papua New Guinea.

Today, IUE operates across three campuses-Sopas, Irelya, and Akom-each specializing in different disciplines, from nursing and health sciences to education, science, business, and technology. With a diverse leadership team and faculty drawn from across PNG and abroad, the university is steadily building capacity toward its long-term goal of enrolling more than 3,000 students annually.

While still young, the Innovative University of Enga has already established itself as a beacon of educational opportunity in the Highlands. Its story is one of determination, partnership, and progress-and it continues to grow as a source of pride for the people of Enga and the nation as a whole.
