Welcome to the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at the Innovative University of Enga.

It is my pleasure to welcome students, faculty, partners, and visitors to our academic community. Our College is committed to preparing the next generation of educators, scholars, and leaders who will contribute meaningfully to the future of Papua New Guinea.

A central mission of the College is the preparation of highly qualified primary school teachers who will serve communities across the nation. We believe that strong foundations in education begin with well-prepared teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, and dedicated to the success of every child. Through rigorous training, practical classroom experience, and a commitment to service, our teacher education programs aim to strengthen primary education throughout Papua New Guinea.

At the same time, the College provides undergraduate education grounded in the liberal arts tradition. Our programs in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics cultivate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and scientific understanding. We strive to equip students with the knowledge, analytical skills, and ethical awareness needed to address the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education

Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education Program integrates Science, Mathematics and English into a holistic, interdisciplinary curriculum. It equips learners with both technical competencies and creative problem-solving abilities, fostering innovation and adaptability in addressing real-world challenges.

  • PNG urgently needs qualified teachers in Science, Mathematics, and English to raise secondary education standards.
  • The program equips educators with advanced subject knowledge and teaching strategies tailored for PNG classrooms.
  • Graduates become key contributors to nation-building by inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders.
  • It offers a pathway to professional growth, higher employability, and recognition in the teaching profession.

By completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced subject mastery in Science, Mathematics, and English.
  • Apply learner-centered pedagogy that addresses diverse classroom needs in PNG.
  • Integrate digital tools and active learning strategies into teaching practice.
  • Design curriculum and assessments aligned with PNG’s National Education Standards.
  • Promote critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving among secondary students.
  • Reflect on professional practice and uphold ethical teaching standards.
  • A recognized Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, Mathematics, English, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2.5 or higher (or Equivalent) as set by PNG’s higher education standards.
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written).
  • Teaching experience at secondary level is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Successful completion of an admission interview may be required.

The Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education is an intensive one-year program designed to prepare university graduates for a successful career in teaching. The curriculum is structured into two semesters, providing a comprehensive blend of educational theory, subject-specific specialization, and hands-on professional practice.

Semester 1: Foundations of Professional Practice

This semester establishes the essential knowledge and skills required for effective classroom instruction. Students develop a strong theoretical base while engaging in practical, simulated teaching environments.

  • Educational Theory: An introduction to core learning theories, educational psychology, and child/adolescent development.
  • Classroom Management: Strategies for creating positive, safe, and engaging learning environments.
  • Pedagogical Skills: Development of fundamental teaching techniques through practical workshops and micro-teaching sessions.
  • Subject Specialization: Students select a specialization in Science, Mathematics, or Language and study the specific curriculum, resources, and instructional methods relevant to their chosen field.

Semester 2: Advanced Application and Professional Practice

The second semester focuses on applying foundational knowledge to complex, real-world scenarios and culminates in a supervised professional practicum.

  • Advanced Pedagogy: Exploration of complex topics, including differentiated instruction, diverse learner support, and inclusive education principles.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Techniques for designing, implementing, and interpreting student assessments to inform teaching practice.
  • Technology in Education: Integrating digital tools and modern educational technologies to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Practice Teaching (Practicum): The program’s capstone experience. Students undertake a supervised teaching placement in a school, where they are responsible for planning, teaching, and assessing students in a real classroom setting.

Graduates of this program can pursue careers in:

  • Academic Research and further postgraduate studies (e.g., Master’s in Education).
  • Teacher Training & Mentorship roles in higher education institutions.
